The SpiriTrust Lutheran® Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program offers free tax help to individuals and families who meet IRS-approved income guidelines and need assistance in preparing their own tax returns throughout York County. 

IRS-certified volunteers provide free basic federal, state and local income tax return preparation with electronic filing to qualified individuals in local communities. They can inform taxpayers about special tax credits for which they may qualify such as Earned Income Tax Credit, Child Tax Credit, and Credit for the Elderly or the Disabled.

We are currently accepting applications from college/university students seeking an internship opportunity to develop and expand their base knowledge of tax law and tax preparation during the spring 2020 semester. 

The internship runs from approximately January through April and will be tailored to meet specific requirements set forth by any approving college/university.  All Tax Internship positions are unpaid.
Many interns from this program go on to secure excellent professional positions due to the amazing experience of learning and developing professional skills in the field of taxation while serving others in a not-for-profit environment.

Responsibilities:

Prepare tax returns and other tasks as assigned by supervisor.
Attend training and/or workshops
Pass all IRS VITA certification exams
Develop working knowledge of professional tax preparation software.
Verifies taxpayer’s identity and conducts a thorough verbal interview with clients
Ensures that taxpayer’s return includes all income and all applicable deductions and credits.
Maintain confidentiality of agency and client information.
Adhere to agency’s policies and procedures, including all IRS rules, regulations and standards of conduct.
Demonstrate professional etiquette and develop efficient work habits.

Qualifications:

Current enrollment in an Accounting or Taxation degree program
GPA of 3.0 or higher
Excellent communication skills
Ability to be a team player as well as work independently as needed
Desire to pursue a career in public accounting and/or taxation
Desire to sit for the CPA and/or Enrolled Agent exams
