Possible fundraising scam in Franklin County

SpiriTrust Lutheran® warns local residents of possible fundraising scam

SpiriTrust Lutheran® Home Care & Hospice, a service of SpiriTrust Lutheran, was alerted last week by a home care client in Franklin County that residents in the Waynesboro area recently received solicitations in the mail requesting  donations for the ‘Waynesboro Area Appeal for Hospice Support Fund’. This appeal is not related to any fundraising efforts by SpiriTrust Lutheran Home Care & Hospice, its parent, SpiriTrust Lutheran® or the SpiriTrust Lutheran® Foundation.

An internet search by SpiriTrust Lutheran staff revealed that similar appeals using the ‘Hospice Support Fund’ name in conjunction with a local community name have been taking place throughout the country since at least 2014. SpiriTrust Lutheran warns residents not to make a financial contribution of any type to an organization claiming to raise funds for local hospice care without first checking the validity of the organization and its fundraising practices.

Concerned individuals should contact the Pennsylvania Department of State, Bureau of Corporations and Charitable Organizations, Charities Section, at 800.732.0999 with any questions or concerns they may have about any charity or fundraising appeal.
